Cooking Steps

  1. 1. Make the dough: Mix flour and water and knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Cover and rest for 30 minutes.
  2. 2. Mix filling: Mix minced meat, onions, scallions, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper. Stir until well combined.
  3. 3. Divide the dough into small portions (about 3cm in diameter). Roll each into a thin circle.
  4. 4. Place 1 tablespoon filling in center of each wrapper. Gather the edges and twist to seal, forming a ruffled top.
  5. 5. Place the buns in a steamer basket lined with cabbage leaves or parchment paper. Steam in boiling water for 15-20 minutes.
  6. 6. Serve hot with chili garlic sauce or soy vinegar sauce.

Cultural Tips

Momo is a social food in Tibet and is always made and eaten together. The family gathers around the table, each person playing a specific role in the steamed bun-making process. The skill of making beautiful buns is a matter of pride, and good bun makers are highly respected in the community.
