Zhaotong Apple
Zhaotong Apple (Zhaotong apple) is one of the most celebrated fruits from Yunnan Province, grown in the high-altitude region of Zhaotong on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. At elevations exceeding 1,900 meters, the combination of intense sunshine, large diurnal temperature variations, and pristine mountain air creates ideal conditions for apple cultivation. The result is a fruit with exceptional crispness, balanced sweetness, and a rich aromatic profile that has earned Zhaotong recognition as one of China's premier apple-growing regions.
The most famous variety is the "Tianjiao" (Tianjiao) apple, known for its deep red coloration, thin skin, and extraordinarily juicy flesh. Unlike apples from lower-altitude regions, Zhaotong apples develop a higher sugar content due to the dramatic temperature swings between day and night — often exceeding 15°C. This natural concentration process creates a more intense, complex flavor profile. The apples are typically harvested from August through October, with the peak season in September when the fruit reaches its optimal balance of sweetness and acidity.
Zhaotong Apple is a specialty fruit from Zhaotong, Yunnan, famous for apples grown in high-altitude, sun-drenched regions. Zhaotong apples have a rosy red color, crisp and sweet juicy flesh, and a rich aromatic profile, making Zhaotong one of the premier apple-growing regions in Southwest China. Located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at elevations exceeding 1,900 meters, Zhaotong enjoys abundant sunshine and large diurnal temperature variations — ideal conditions for apple cultivation. The 'Tianjiao' variety is the most famous, with thin skin, crisp flesh, and exceptionally high sweetness.
Beyond fresh consumption, Zhaotong apples are used in various local preparations including dried apple slices, apple vinegar, and apple-based desserts. The local government has actively promoted the Zhaotong apple brand, establishing it as a geographical indication product. Visitors to Zhaotong can experience apple picking at orchards scattered across the plateau, particularly in areas like Zhaoyang District and Qiaojia County, where the fruit has become a cornerstone of the local agricultural economy.
